Built to Last: The McArthur Legacy in Recruitment Since 1969

In the dynamic world of recruitment, longevity isn’t just rare, it’s remarkable. For over 55 years, McArthur has not only survived but thrived, growing from a modest Adelaide-based operation into one of Australia’s most respected recruitment and HR consultancies.

Behind that enduring success is a story shaped by vision, values, and a deep commitment to people. In a recent interview on the Owner Insights podcast, Executive Director Matthew McArthur reflected on the journey that began in 1969, when his father, John McArthur, laid the foundations for what would become a national recruitment powerhouse.

From a Typing Bureau to a Trusted National Brand

The McArthur story begins with the purchase of the Adelaide Typewriting Association (ATA), a 100-year-old bureau once serving Adelaide’s elite professionals. Recognising the shift in workplace needs and the untapped potential in human capital services, John McArthur made a bold decision: to transition from typing services to recruitment solutions.

Armed with determination, a typewriter, and a small team, John began placing skilled professionals into permanent roles. It wasn’t long before temporary staffing emerged as a growth opportunity, a then-novel concept in Australia. McArthur was quick to respond, expanding into temporary recruitment across sectors including commercial services, government, local councils and aged care.

“He was always ahead of the market,” Matthew shared. “He saw what was happening in the UK and US, and believed we could build something just as strong here.”

Growth Without Compromising Values

By the mid-1980s, McArthur had grown steadily, but it was the deliberate decision to invest in specialist recruitment divisions rather than chasing short-term profits that set the business apart. This long-term view enabled McArthur to build deep expertise in areas such as early childhood education, social work, community services, and nursing.

Unlike many agencies focused solely on transactions, McArthur’s approach has always been relationship-led. Clients receive tailored recruitment strategies, and candidates benefit from genuine career guidance, not just job placement.

“We’re not in the business of ticking boxes. We match people to cultures, not just roles.”

That mindset continues to resonate today. McArthur now employs over 200 internal staff and engages more than 6,500 temporary workers annually across Australia. With offices in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra and Perth, the company delivers both local insight and national capability.

A Business Built by Family, Sustained by Culture

While many recruitment firms measure success in placements, McArthur takes pride in its people both inside and outside the organisation. Some staff members have been with the company for over 30 years, and multigenerational field workers are not uncommon. It’s not just a company, it’s a community.

Matthew, who joined the business in the early 1980s, attributes this longevity to a culture of respect, inclusion and shared purpose. He recalls early days helping his father build partition walls for interview rooms and later, learning to lead with humility and accountability.

“I never felt like I had to fill his shoes. I was encouraged to grow into my own leadership style that’s what good succession looks like.” - Matthew shared.

Looking Ahead: Stronger Than Ever

As McArthur looks to the future, the focus remains clear: strengthen every branch, invest in people, and continue delivering sector-leading recruitment services. With deep roots and a forward-facing mindset, McArthur is well-positioned to navigate the evolving employment landscape and continue making a meaningful difference for clients and candidates alike.
